There are many ways to prevent tooth decay. More on this under the topic of Preventive Dentistry. Sometimes, however, it is inevitable that a carious lesion will form. This is often only discovered when it is already big enough to be seen with the naked eye. Caries treatment is already more difficult at this point. In order to prevent this late diagnosis, radiographs of the interstitial spaces are taken regularly, on which carious lesions can be detected early.

X-rays should not be taken for caries prophylaxis because of the exposure to radiation, particularly when diagnosing tooth decay of children and pregnant women. An innovative alternative that I offer you in practice is early caries detection with infrared light. Carious lesions between the teeth are visualized with an intraoral scanner through near-infrared images. Recent studies suggest that with this method, lesions can become visible weeks and months before they would have been seen on x-rays. Due to the early stage of caries diagnosis, caries removal is possible without pain.

This radiation-free method for early caries detection is of course not reserved only for our little patients and pregnant women. We are happy to offer them to all our patients.

Frequently Asked Questions About Early Detection of Cavities

Cavities can be detected early through regular dental check-ups using the following methods:

  • Visual examination: The dentist inspects teeth and gums for visible damage or discoloration.
  • X-rays: Useful for detecting cavities in hard-to-reach areas, such as between teeth.
  • Laser diagnostics: Modern devices, like the Diagnodent laser, identify cavities at early stages.

Regular visits to the dentist enable early diagnosis and treatment before significant damage occurs.

Our clinic uses advanced technologies for early cavity detection, including:

  • Diagnodent laser: Detects cavities using optical measurement.
  • Digital X-rays: Provides precise images with minimal radiation exposure.
  • Magnifying glasses: Offer an enlarged view for detailed inspection.

These tools enable accurate and timely diagnosis, allowing for prompt intervention.

Yes, cavities can be effectively detected in both children and adults. For children, the focus is on:

  • Early monitoring of baby teeth.
  • Educating parents on proper dental care.

For adults, the focus is on identifying damage to permanent teeth and cavities in hard-to-reach areas, such as between teeth.

No, early cavity detection is completely painless. Procedures like visual inspection, laser diagnostics, and X-rays are gentle and cause no discomfort.

If patients are anxious about dental visits, our team provides compassionate care to make the experience as comfortable as possible.

If cavities are detected early, minimally invasive measures can be taken:

  • Sealing the affected area to prevent progression.
  • Fluoride treatment to strengthen enamel.
  • Removing decayed tissue and filling the area with a high-quality material.

Timely treatment helps avoid significant damage and complex procedures.

Factors that increase the risk of cavities include:

  • Frequent consumption of sugary foods and drinks.
  • Poor oral hygiene.
  • Insufficient fluoride intake from toothpaste or drinking water.
  • Dry mouth due to reduced saliva production.

A balanced diet and proper oral care can significantly reduce the risk of cavities.

Cavities can be largely prevented through a combination of proper oral hygiene, a healthy diet, and regular professional check-ups. Key measures include:

  • Brushing teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Cleaning between teeth using dental floss or interdental brushes.
  • Regular dental visits for early detection and prevention.

Reducing sugar intake also plays a crucial role.

Adults should have dental check-ups at least every 6 months. For children or patients at higher risk of cavities, check-ups every 3–4 months are recommended.

These regular visits help detect issues early and prevent significant damage.

Early cavities can be identified by the following signs:

  • White or brown spots on the tooth surface.
  • Sensitivity to sweet, hot, or cold foods.
  • Unusual roughness on the tooth enamel.

If you notice these signs, schedule a dental appointment promptly.

Modern technologies, such as laser diagnostics and digital X-rays, are highly accurate in detecting cavities at early stages. These methods are:

  • Gentle for the patient.
  • Effective for diagnosing hard-to-reach areas.
  • Useful for monitoring disease progression.

These technologies help initiate timely treatment and prevent significant dental damage.
